Catharsis: The Journey

By Genevieve Salamone | May 27th, 2021

Hello, my name is Geneviève Salamone and I am a professional Huron-Wendat violinist, producer and composer based in West Des Moines, IA. Catharsis: The Journey is a collaborative art project revolving around my recovery in confronting Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of falling victim to 15 years of incestual childhood sexual abuse.

On the evening of Friday May 28th, 2021, viewers will be able to tune-in via Facebook and YouTube to an approximate 60-minute livestream concert event which will include a short documentary-style film produced by local videographer Nathian Steir, from The Vine Productions; as well as 12 original music videos featuring a number of local artists to bring the music of this album to life.

The powerful release of music, comes from within

Collaborators include dancers from Ballet Des Moines; musicians from the Des Moines Symphony; aerialists from Cirque Wonderland; local flow artist Leia Signs; students and teachers from the Des Moines Symphony Academy and many more. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, a great number of artists, myself included, found themselves suddenly unemployed. It was with that in mind that I decided to create this collaborative project that would support local artists who have been financially impacted by the pandemic.

This project is more than just an album

  • Reclaiming of Huron-Wendat Indigenous heritage; #MeToo activism and female empowerment, also featuring the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Movement #MMIW
  • Confronting mental health awareness by using music to heal from Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of childhood sexual abuse
  • Each piece of music on 𝐶𝑎𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑠𝑖𝑠 reflects a different emotion or memory that I have experienced along my journey
